Nine Graphic Organizers for Teaching Close Reading
Here are 9 graphic organizers that can be used to help your students closely interpret a fictional reading of your choice. The organizers include one "master" organizer in which information about all elements can be recorded, as well as individual organizers for characters (main and minor), setting, conflict, theme, and author's tone and writing style. Also included are definitions of the Elements of Fiction that both students and teachers will find helpful. These organizers have been successfully used in a variety of classroom settings from middle school through college.
If you are looking for a novel to use with these graphic organizers, take a look atĀ ElevenĀ by Tom Rogers. I have chapter-by-chapter close reading questions with an answer key that pairs nicely with these Elements of Fiction graphic organizers. You can find the close reading questions for Eleven under reading passages on this Web site.
